Fun Day!

On Saturday September 22, our dedicated volunteer firefighters and EMTs participated in the 2007 Eastampton Fun Day at Buttonwood Park. They conducted kitchen safety and fire extinguisher demonstrations, held a free raffle for fire extinguishers and talking smoke/CO detectors, and provided fire engine rides to children of all ages.

Cold Water/Ice Rescue Technician Class

Captain Matt Geiger, firefighter/EMTs Bill Tkacs and Mike Sanchez, and firefighters Lynn Benedict and Steve Koza recently completed a cold water/ice rescue technician class hosted by the Delran Fire Department. The crew, with Rescue 3419 providing support, spent two days in February in the frigid waters of Lake Lonnie putting the department's dry suits and other water rescue equipment through its paces. The department now has seven certified cold water/ice rescue technicians.

Emergency Squad Responds to Stabbing

The Eastampton Emergency Squad Thursday Night Duty Crew, under the direction of EMS Chief Shelly Augustino, responded to a report of a stabbing on Friday morning, January 26 at the Slumberland Motel. The all-volunteer crew assisted the paramedics from Virtua Health System in treating, and then transported the victim and a paramedic to Helene Fuld Medical center in Trenton. The Eastampton Fire Company placed an Engine crew on standby in the event a helicopter transport was required, but it was not needed. The incident was under the command of Department Chief Phillip Polios.

Newspaper accounts had indicated that ambulances from Mount Holly and Burlington City had transported the victim, but they were incorrect. The ambulances and paid crews from these two towns happened to be in the area at the time of the incident and graciously offered their services in case they were required. The Eastampton Fire-Rescue Department thanks them for their offer of assistance and the professionalism they exhibited to our volunteer professionals.

For more information on the Emergency Squad's duty crew program, please contact EMS Chief Shelly Augustino. If you are interested in general membership information for the all-volunteer Eastampton Fire-Rescue Department, as a firefighter, EMT, rescue technician, or fire police officer, please contact Department Chief Phillip Polios.

Eastampton receives SAFER Grant

U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton (NJ-3rd) announced that a federal grant worth a total of $58,000 has been awarded by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Grants and Training to the Eastampton Fire-Rescue Department. "Volunteer fire companies are on the front lines of emergency response," Saxton said. "In recent years, these important community service organizations have seen drops in membership. I applaud the initiative to attract new members to continue serving the public."

Eastampton Fire-Rescue Department, an all-volunteer organization, which has about 35 active firefighters and emergency medical technicians to serve the town's growing population of nearly 7,000 residents, will receive $58,000 to develop and implement a five-year plan to attract more members, according to Chief Philip Polios.

The grants, made in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) is awarded under the Fiscal Year 2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. This is round 11 of the AFG Program’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) announcements. Funds under the SAFER program are intended to support the hiring of firefighters and the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.
