Crane Fire on Woodlane Road

April 16, 2010: After being dispatched to a vehicle fire at Woodlane Road and Route 206 at about 0730, fire department members responding to the Woodlane Road Station soon realized that the location was at Woodlane Road and Student Drive. The vehicle was a Krupp 80-ton eight-wheel truck-mounted hydraulic crane owned by Thackray Crane Rentals. The driver of the vehicle lost power. When he pulled over to investigate, he found the engine on fire.

The crew of first-arriving Rescue Engine 3411 found the vehicle with the cab and engine fully involved extending into the boom hydraulics. Leading off with a 1.75-inch pre-connect, the crew extinguished the fire in about five minutes. They were assisted by the crew from Engine 3413, which also provided additional water to Rescue Engine 3411. Approximately 1,250 gallons of water were used for extinguishment and overhaul. Lieutenant Czaja was incident commander. Fire Police 3418 assisted Eastampton Police with school traffic at the busy intersection. Westampton Engine 2723 was requested for back up but did not go into service. An ambulance from Mount Holly stood by.

Community Basketball Game

March 26, 2010: The volunteer members of the Eastampton Fire-Rescue Department faced some of their toughest competition... at the annual Community Basketball Game. The department faced off against the 8th grade girls and boys basketball teams and the School Staff in the round-robin fundraiser tournament for the 8th grade dance and trip. This year, Team Public Safety consisted of department members Phil Polios, Toby Scott, Gene Oberfrank, Kelsey Paolini, Shelly Augustino, Tom Irizarry, Ed Bennet, Dave Wiersma, Jim Fitzgerald, and Dan O'Grady, along with team captain Zach Gsell from Public Works, and the Honorable Jay Springer, Mayor. In addition to its athletic process, the department contributed a standby ambulance and crew for the evening.

March Madness (the Unnamed Hurricane)

March 14, 2010: During the roughly thirty hour period from Saturday morning March 13 through Sunday afternoon March 14, the EFD was kept much busier than usual dealing with storm-related incidents. The department responded to twenty calls, nineteen of which were in Eastampton. Fourteen calls were related to electrical hazards - primarily trees falling onto power lines. The department responded to a dwelling fire in Eastampton and one in Mount Holly. The run sheets were rounded out by two alarm systems, an assist police (for traffic control), and a public service call (for flooding).

Eighteen department volunteers responded to the calls for help providing more than 150 personnel-hours of volunteer service, and another member managed to get married Saturday! All department apparatus - three engines, the emergency services unit, fire police unit, fire marshal's car, and two ambulances - were on the street at one point or another during the weekend.

EFD Apparatus and Station Realignment

February 1, 2010: In order to increase operational efficiency and improve response times, the Eastampton Fire-Rescue Department has realigned apparatus responding from its two stations. Previously, the fire company operated out of Station 341 on Smithville Road, but because of space limitations had to house its fire police unit and rescue boat at Station 349 on Woodlane Road. The emergency squad operated out of Station 349, as did the fire marshal.

After an analysis of membership and emergency incident locations, the department officers determined that two changes needed to be made. Fire and EMS first-due apparatus should operate together out of a single location for better operational efficiency, and the location of first-due apparatus should be closer to the township population center.

To achieve these two objectives the following changes became effective February 1, 2010. The department's primary operations will be out of the station on Woodlane Road (349). This station is strategically located central to residential areas, target hazards, and the homes of members. It will house:

  • Rescue Engine 3411
  • Engine 3413
  • Ambulance 3492
  • Emergency Services 3419

Ideally, all apparatus should be housed at the Woodlane Road station (349). Unfortunately, because not all apparatus can be accommodated at this time, the following apparatus will be located at the Smithville Road station (341):

  • Engine 3412
  • Fire Police 3418
  • Rescue Boat Marine 341
  • Fire Marshal Car FM34

Besides the substantial improvements in operational efficiency, the department expects to see response times decrease noticeably as a result of this realignment.
