Carbon Monoxide Death Reported in New Jersey
October 17, 2011

Over the past weekend, the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System (NJPIES) received its first report of death from carbon monoxide poisoning for this heating season.

Since carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that can deprive the body of oxygen, the NJ poison experts encourage everyone to install carbon monoxide detectors in his or her home, especially near sleeping areas and near the furnace and/or  water heater.  Carbon monoxide poisoning is a real danger and should be taken seriously.  Exposure can produce headaches, sleepiness, fatigue, confusion and irritability at low levels.  At higher levels, it can result in nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, impaired vision and coordination, and death.

NJPIES leaders urge medical professionals, parents, educators, caregivers and the general public to call the toll-free poison center hot line, 800-222-1222, with any questions about carbon monoxide poisoning or for any poisoning emergency. Even after a serious poisoning, symptoms may not appear until many hours later.  DO NOT wait until symptoms appear. The NJ poison experts are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  All services are free and confidential.

Life-Saving Tips
  • Open flues when fireplaces are in use
  • Chimneys should be inspected and cleaned annually
  • Test carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms to make sure they work
  • DO NOT idle the car inside the garage
  • NEVER use charcoal indoors or in areas with inadequate ventilation
  • Have a trained professional inspect, clean and tune-up central heating systems like the furnace every year
  • Gas appliances must have adequate ventilation so that carbon monoxide will not accumulate
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors near your furnace and/or water heater, as well as on every floor
  • NEVER use charcoal or gas stoves to heat your home
  • DO NOT use gas powered equipment like portable generators, propane stoves, charcoal grills in the home or garage

If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning take immediate action:

  • Get out of the house.
  • Contact your local fire department immediately.
  • Do not waste time opening windows or trying to air out the house/building; which will delay your escape from possibly dangerous fumes.

NJ Poison Information & Education System
Post-Hurricane Safety Advisory

September 1, 2011

Now that hurricane cleanup has begun, the NJ poison experts want to remind residents how to stay safe and prevent accidental poisonings during the cleanup process.

  1. Do not use gasoline powered washers or generators in the basement, home, or garage.  Gasoline powered equipment releases large amounts of carbon monoxide, increasing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  2. NEVER MIX cleaning products such as ammonia and bleach or other disinfectants.
  3. Use bleach to clean mold off hard things (like floors, stoves, sinks, certain toys, countertops, flatware, plates, and tools). Mix no more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water.
  4. When working with cleaning products, wear rubber boots, rubber gloves, goggles, and when necessary, a mask to prevent skin and respiratory irritation.
  5. Open windows and doors to get fresh air when using cleaning products.
  6. Wash hands routinely and thoroughly to prevent infection.  Wash all clothing worn during cleanup in hot water separate from the laundering of routine clothing.
  7. Take things that were wet for two (2) or more days and place them outside the home to be cleaned or thrown away.
Help is Just a Phone Call Away: 1-800-222-1222

If you suspect a poisoning, Call the NJ Poison Center's Hotline immediately at 1-800-222-1222 for treatment advice.  The NJ poison experts recommend putting the number in all family cell phones as well as programming it as a speed dial number on landlines.  In addition, the hotline number should be prominently posted near all phones in the home.

Multiple Calls, including Energized Wires
February 19, 2011

At about 0730 hours, the EFD was dispatched to the 700 block of Powell Road for wires arcing. While still en route to the initial dispatch, the department was dispatched to two separate alarm system calls, one on Willowbrook Drive and the other on Smithville Road. Chief 3400 (Oberfrank) investigated the alarm system calls, which were determined to be accidental due to the power failure.

Rescue Engine 3411 responded to the wires call and found a primary electric wire down, arcing on lawn, igniting a brush fire. Crews could not begin extinguishment due to the energized electric lines. The situation was compounded by sustained 35 to 45 mph winds, with gusts up to 60 mph.

Engine 3413 and Fire Police 3418 closed the road to traffic to relieve Eastampton police officers to return to patrol. Utility 3419 stood by with Rescue Engine 3411 on scene until utility crews arrived to cut power to the wires. Crews then extinguished the brush fire.
